[ubuntu] failure to install lubuntu

I have Ubuntu 16.04 on an old Toshiba Portege laptop. CD/DVD no longer works so have been trying to install Lubuntu 16.04 from USB drive. However, I always get the following error message:

an operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system.

Press any key to restart.

No way to make it going, I have to remove pen drive and go back to Ubuntu.

My questions:
- is there a way to go back and do a recovery of the Ubuntu 16.04 OS (it used to work quite fine until some 10 days ago); and
- how to enable to drive to read the USB device.
