hi, i am user of ubuntu 12.04 (precise pangolin) not the greatest user i might add, however i have come across a problem which is all my doing. i allowed my laptop to practically die, the battery is not recognized, and wont take a charge until im able to log in. the problem is, i cant find my notebook that has all my passwords in it to log in, so therefore i cannot sudo apt-get update or sudo apt-get upgrade and get the battery fully charged until this is resolved. i tried searching on google, but it says to restart and hold down the shift button, i tried that, it doesnt work. please help if you can.
