[ubuntu_studio] Poor video resolution selection. Downgrade or what?

mercredi 10 août 2016

The new driver stack is just causing endless troubles with the video side of things. At first I couldn't get my dual monitor system detected. Then after a fresh install it won't allow for higher resolutions than 1366x768 or 1024x768. And just the other day I was given a new screen to replace my older 4:3 lcd as my secondary screen... plug it in via the only cable I have (SVGA) and the system refuses to detect it as anything other than a generic 4:3 monitor. And based on the fact that another guy posted on askubuntu about that issue the very same day (he could get it recognized with an HDMI cable temporarily), I'm guessing that this is a glitch, but it won't be fixed for quite a while. And that was after finding that I should delete the displays.xml file... I even tried the AMDPro drivers to the same effect.

For what it's worth, I'm running an AMD R9 380 Fury with 4GB of ram. The AMDGPU and the AMDPro drivers both support it.... like teenagers can handle driving a Formula 1 car during Indie 500... They can get it in gear and go around the track, but don't have the same mastery of the vehicle as a seasoned professional driver does.

The extremely limited resolutions is a huge deal for me... I'm using a 32" widescreen and a 20" widescreen and really prefer higher resolutions.

This "progress" seems way more like a cha-cha... two steps forward and two backwards.... So given that I like most of the features of Studio a lot, do you think I should just install Ubuntu 14.04 and then install the Studio packages? Or download Studio 14.04 and install that way? Or does anyone know of a way to get higher resolutions without downgrading?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
