Problem with google/firefox

I have set google as my default search engine in firefox, the following error occurs each time I try to run a search. It all worked fine for many years using google in firefox, but this suddenly happened about two weeks ago. Cmpletely removing and re-installing
firefox using synaptic made no difference. This does not happen using Chrome. Have tried to contact google to no avail. Perhaps from the second para of the message, firefox may not be set up correctly, but looking at its various options, I cannot find a way to fix this. Can someone help?
