Mac 10.11.6 host, Ubuntu 16.04.1 Guest - NO SOUND

Just replaced a gen 2 macbook pro with the current generation.

I'm running the exact same config I had on my gen 2 macbook:

Virtual Box 5.1.2
Ubuntu Mate 16.0.4.1

I cannot for the life of me get sound working. I've poured over countless linux audio troubleshooting url's. and nothing will get sound working.

Sound works fine natively in the host os (max os).

Does anyone have ANY linux distro working under virtual box on a current gen macbook with latest virtual box?

I need to know quickly if I need to get a different laptop while I still have time to return this one for a refund. Kinda getting fed up with the direction macbook and macos has been going anyways.
