upgrade simply just does not start

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hello fellow ubunters
I confess to not being very patient. I just have tried at least five times to upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 and this ****ing upgrade simply does not start. You get three options on the screen : no, remind me later and yes.
Since it would not start, I have tried rebooting, I have seen the selfsame options pop up, I have answered yes five times and still nothing, nada, nulla, rien.
But, with the laptop, the upgrade went on very smoothly.
Could it be this new upgrade is incompatible with an old HP DD7700?

Thanks in advance to anyone with the answer or the 'how to'.
Chris.

No WiFi after last update

My WiFi was working great for a year on my new Lenovo Yoga Pro 13 and today I did a Software Updater update and when I rebooted I now get "no network devices available". Does anyone know what happened?

Ubuntu 16.04 Internal Error

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hi, I'm new to ubuntu and recently i just installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS from usb. It works well on my thinkpad T460 for several days until the internal error occured today. I tried restarting my laptop, then log in. However, when i logged in, the launcher and the menu bar (File, Edit, View bar) are gone. I am not sure what the internal error details are since i didn't screenshot and remember them.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

*note: I have updated my Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to 16.04.01 from the command sudo apt-get upgrade and I've also sudo apt-get update. So the Ubuntu I'm using is already up-to-date.
The terminal seems to be working but needed to be opened by ctrl-alt-T
I'm typing this thread from firefox and i opened the firefox by typing firefox on the terminal.

[xubuntu] Superblock set into the future

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

After installing xubuntu, I get a message: "Superblock set into the future"

I don't want UTC time, but LOCAL TIME instead. In the past issuing "timedatectl set-local-rtc 1" fix it. Not any more. It still works in Xenial.

timedatectl set-local-rtc 1 is for LOCAL TIME
timedatectl set-local-rtc 0 is for UTC time

Here's some info for my system:

[lubuntu] Silly question about lubuntu 14.04 LTS

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Your question is not completely clear but I will answer the best I can.

Shortly after it reaches EOL all the repositories are moved to archived servers so you will not be able to get any updates not even security.

You can redirect your repository source list to the archives to get updates but all the software will be old they do not get anymore new updates once moved to the archives so your system would be at great risk if you go online with it, I personally recommend that no one ever uses an EOL system.
Thanks

Is it possible to change the background color of windows in Ubuntu 16.04?

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hi, everyone. New user here.

Trying to get used to Linux. So far, I've managed.
However, like topic tile says, is it possible to change the white background color windows have?
This white Ubuntu uses is on the verge of leaving me blind.
Windows 8 and 10 don't let you change color but I'm not surpised coming from microsoft.
What about Ubuntu? Is it possible?
I'm using Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS.

Thanks.

New UEFI system - dual boot

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Moved to your own thread. Boot issues are almost always unique and your are not the same as thread you posted in. That is considered hijacking. And then thread can get confusing as we do not know who is posting about what issue.

You have installed Ubuntu in BIOS boot mode on gpt partitioned drive. But Windows is in UEFI boot mode.

How you boot install media UEFI or BIOS is how it installs. You should have two choices in UEFO for flash drive UEFI:name and name (BIOS boot) where name is brand or label of flash drive.

You can use Boot-Repair's advanced options to totally un-install grub-pc (BIOS) and install grub-efi-amd64(UEFI) to convert to UEFI boot. Make sure Internet is working as it has to download new copy of grub.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 16.04 64bit boot-Huge splashscreen

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hi folks,
Recently did clean install of Ubuntu 16.04. Everything was good, but the screen kept flashing after booting to desktop. The default X.org X server was set. I have a Geforce 7025 / nforce 630a video card. So, I set it to NVIDIA legacy binary driver version 304.131, the only option available. Now my Ubuntu splash screen is HUGE. I don't want to Bork my install so, how to bring back the normal size of the splash screen? I've tried these repairs below, but no joy. I know the gpu card is older, but it has done the job so far.

http://ift.tt/2aaykGQ

I got one answer from AskUbuntu http://ift.tt/2aayeic Still no joy. Can anyone assist?
Thank you.

[ubuntu] Keyring did not get unlocked

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hey all
The strangest thing I've ever seen with Ubuntu just happened when I started the Chromium Web Browser. A box with a message popped up on my screen saying

"Enter Password to unlock your keyring password."
"The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer"

Just prior to this message, I had been browsing in Firefox without problems, but I shut it down. Then I started to open Chromium and that's when the message appeared.
Once it appeared, I could not enter text in Chromium. I then opened Firefox and it opened the splash page, but would not accept any input.
I canceled the keyring box and note, then everything was OK. At least so far.

I do have a Ubuntu system password, but it does not need it unless I want to mess with primary Ubuntu. Why did this happen and what can I do about it?? Is it some kind of malware?

[ubuntu] Second OS install, still refuses Ubuntu base updates. Auto-partition incorrect?

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

The first install of Ubuntu was problematic and I found out I did not disable "secure boot" in the BIOS. I believe I have the BIOS properly set for Ubuntu this time, yet software updater still will not install Ubuntu base updates, which I assume are important updates.

System specs: Lenovo G50 laptop; AMD 6410 CPU, 8GB RAM, original HDD (with OEM Win10, never activated) replaced with Samsung 850 EVO & Ubuntu (no Windows at all), BIOS is a Legacy type (I have a UEFI desktop, so know the difference).

I chose "Erase disk and install", then ran "lsblk" to see what it created for partitioning, which showed this:
sda 232.9G
sda1 vfat 512m /boot/efi
sda2 ext4 225.4G /
sda3 swap 7G [swap]
sr0 1024m

I forgot to check what the first Ubuntu auto-install created, so cannot compare to see if anything changed. I know that swap partition seems rather much, but am not familiar enough with partitioning to know if there are any other mistakes.

The only thing I changed in the "Ubuntu Software Center" is switching the download server from my countrys' to the main, because I encountered problems with the first install & downloading updates from my county's server.

Other than that, I activated and configured the UFW, following the thread in these forums titled "Creating a firewall for your Ubuntu desktop".

Can't 'make' rtorrent after /configure

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

I don't know if anyone here will be able to help me but this is more difficult than I thought and more difficult than it should be.

I've downloaded rtorrent 0.9.2 (yes it needs to be this version) in a tar.gz format. I've extracted that and read the install file which say's you should run './configure' followed by 'make' and then 'make install'

I did the './configure and every time it gave an error about dependencies, so I installed the dependencies (I think I got all of them) and tried the 'make' command. When I do this though it doesn't work. I'm not sure what the actual error is as it doesn't make it clear but it does say 'makefile:383: recipe for target 'all' failed at the end.

I don't know what causing this or where to go from here.

I never knew installing something on linux that you download in a tar.gz was so difficult.

Any ideas anyone? Anyone seen this before?

Thanks

Love Ubuntu; HP 2000 Laptop Screen Slowly Blinks Out

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

I've been dying to try Ubuntu for years now, so glad I did. I will NEVER go back to Microsoft!!!! I'm a retired desktop support tech who spent the majority of his career battling Microsoft products. Thank God those days are over. An internet friend tried to persuade me years ago to give Ubuntu a shot. Don't know why I waited so long...old programming, I guess.

Anyway, I should mention that I pulled this screen from an unknown and quite beat up Compaq laptop, so it's very likely the screen itself is no good. It works fine when I first boot up the laptop, but as the laptop warms up it will blink off for about 5 seconds, then come right back, then continue like this about 10 or so more times until it blacks out completely. What I have tried is, obviously, installing Ubuntu onto the drive that I also pulled from that machine. Love how simple the process is, and the fact that I can put the latest build on a 2 Gig flash drive.

The laptop is running fine presently and the screen has blacked out, currently hooked to external monitor which is working fine.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Here are my specs:

[lubuntu] LXC for testing process

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hi Everyone,

I'm working on a project which is a web application development encompassing web-site (html), RESTful web server, database, etc.
I want to establish testing using LXC, to let testers simply start several containers with pre-deployed parts of web app and verify test cases.

For every new web-app version a bunch of LXC containers will be created each with particular pre-installed software (like DB server or application server).
Then pieces of web-app will be copied to the rootfs'es of corresponding containers.

What I want to know is whether above can be considered as a good approach and what shortcomings it might result into.
I will appreciate any comments, suggestions or recommendations. If anyone knows of similar usage of LXC please kindly share your experience.

Thanks in advance)

Intel Wireless 7260 very unstable

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

I have had an unstable wi-fi for a long now, but just found out it's the Intel Wireless 7260 card causing this.

What I mean is that the wi-fi will drop randomly, and only rebooting fixes it (temporarily until it drops again).

I tried plugging an external wi-fi card and it worked perfectly.

How can I fix this issue with my laptop's wifi card?

Code:

apt sources (or the lack of)

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

#1 (Shotwell) Developer repo

Code:

Reading package lists... Done E: The repository 'http://ift.tt/2ajClWD yakkety Release' does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
Does this simply mean that they haven't made a yakkety package yet?
Is there a way to force installation of the Xenial package?

#2
I always switch default file-browser to nemo. (Exept handling the desktop which brakes unity handling backgrounds etc).

Well this isnt exactly a problem because it seems nemo is no longer dependant on the entire cinnamon desktop being installed. But i usually use this source: http://ift.tt/2ajBRQ2

I did not notice the "apt release error" when i updated and simply "sudo apt-get install nemo nemo-fileroller".
This worked fine with the yakkety repositories.

Help with graphics drivers/software

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hello all! Hopefully the forums will let me post - I've been having trouble recently.
Well, this community has been so helpful and knowledgeable that I thought I'd put this problem I'm having on the table to see
what you all can come up with.
It is a graphics and/or hardware acceleration problem.
I honestly don't know what the exact problem is, but I know that I can't run anything that requires 3d graphics rendering, such as games that I would like to play.

I put this in Debian because I'm running Kali 2.0 Rolling release distribution, which is based on Debian wheezy/jessie.

Here is some output from my terminal regarding the issue:

Code:

root@KandA: ~# glxinfo
name of display: :0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

root@KandA: ~# glxgears
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
The machine I'm running my OS on is an older model Acer laptop. It has the Intel B960 processor, 2.2Ghz, 2MB L3 cache.

It has 2 cores, 2 threads.
It runs Intel HD graphics.
The only advanced technologies it has is "Enhanced Intel Speedstep, Intel Fast Memory Access, and Intel Flex Memory.
So, it doesn't have virtualization capabilities.

I'm adding this because I tried to use virtualbox to run an Ubuntu virtual machine for playing games that require a good graphics engine, but
because it doesn't have virtualization I can't really run a VM with much success.

I tried downloading the latest drivers for Intel HD graphics, but they aren't available via the aptitude/apt-get packages, and when I try to download the source and build it, there
are always dependencies that I lack, and can't get except by downloading with 'wget,' and in the end don't work themselves.

Is there anyone willing to help me troubleshoot my problem with me? I'm running out of ideas.
I'll download a game, or software, and give the error output. I'll give you guys any information you require to help me troubleshoot this.

I've been trying to make this work for a month, and am starting to realize that I can't have the penetration testing capabilites, AND the graphics capabilities too..

Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you.

[ubuntu] SSD not showing in FDISK and Gparted

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hi all, I was tried to install ubuntu 16.04 in my laptop that previously using windows 8. But when I try to install it, the installer can't detect my SSD, and displayed error message that my space doens't enough for installing ubuntu. When I try to google it , I found that the ubuntu didn't recognize my SSD , but it was detected in BIOS and I already set in AHCI mode. Gparted also can't detect my SSD and my harddrive still running well in windows. I have tried to google it using any keyword that cross my mind but can't find the exact solution for my problem. [ubuntu] spam assassin won't start after upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04.1

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

After the upgrade, a few of my services would not start at boot. ntp, courier-authdaemon and spamassassin. I was able to get ntp and courier-authdaemon migrated to systemd, and now those start at boot. But spamassassin can only be manually started. I looked around the 'net for migration instructions, but was not able to find anything, so I'm turning to you folks. What do I need to do the get spamassassin starting at boot.
Thanks

[all variants] installed ubuntu, then Linux Mint, now ubuntu starts in Emergency Mode.

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

I partitioned my drive and installed Ubuntu Studio 16.04.1 into two partitions (root and home), and it restarted fine.

Then I installed Linux Mint 18 into the final two partitions (I had not mounted them under ubuntu during the install). Linux Mint booted fine.

Now, though, Ubuntu Studio goes into Emergency Mode when I try to boot it. I did not alter the ubuntu partitions during the Mint install, though I did overwrite grub.

Can anyone please help me fix this?

Thank you,
Greg Conquest

Multiple Issues after Upgrading to 16.04 LTS from 14.04 LTS

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

I am using the KDE desktop manager (i.e. Kubuntu). Here are the issues I have seen thus far:

1. My 14.04 KDE settings (located in ~/.kde) are not supported and/or not read by 16.04.

2. KDE Window manager occasionally crashes; this leaves the user with no ability to manage opened windows (i.e. move, resize, close, etc). New windows appear on the upper-left of the screen with the same problem in that they cannot be managed. A log-out/log-in solves the problem.

3. Audio playback of MP3 music sometimes stutters.

4. Custom IPv4 setting of wired network interface stopped working; I had to revert to using DHCP, which is not ideal for a server system. Before going to DHCP, I could not ping my router, much less anything on the outside (e.g. www.google.com).

Overall, I regret going through with the upgrade. I recommend to others to forgo this version. It is quite clear that insufficient testing was conducted on the product. As for 14.04, it is supposedly supported until 2019, which should cover the lifetime of a computer that was purchased 2-3 years ago.

If anyone has any comments on how to resolve any of the issues listed above, I would appreciate reading them.

[kubuntu] Version 16.04 Very long boot time

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

I recently upgraded to version 16.02

I have a number of observations.

First I see a long lost of detail with OK at the left hand side. Is this normal?

When I type in my password it takes about five minuted for the next screen to appear. This is far too long.

I also have to type my wifi password in at each session.

I suspended a session, and later pressed the button on the Dell tower to re-activate the session, the screen went black and I had to reboot.

I have created four virtual desktops and activate the cube, but it appears not to wok. I also want independent desktops but can see the box.

I'd like Homerun kicker back

Any help appreciated

ssd trim on Ubuntu 16.04 server

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

I have a sftp server that I am running that is installed on a Transcend model TS32GSSD340. It supports TRIM.

Code:

ad*****x@d***03:~$ sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda }| grep "TRIM supported"
}: No such file or directory
           * Data Set Management TRIM supported (limit 8 blocks)
I setup (I noticed this file content is different from previous v14.04 version I had notes from)

Code:

ad*****x@d***03:~$ sudo cat /etc/cron.weekly/fstrim
#!/bin/sh
# trim all mounted file systems which support it
/sbin/fstrim --all --no-model-check || true
And received this forwarded complaint root email:

Code:

/etc/cron.weekly/fstrim:
/sbin/fstrim: unrecognized option '--no-model-check'

Usage:
 fstrim [options] <mount point>

Discard unused blocks on a mounted filesystem.

Options:
-a, --all trim all mounted filesystems that are supported
-o, --offset <num> the offset in bytes to start discarding from
-l, --length <num> the number of bytes to discard
-m, --minimum <num> the minimum extent length to discard
-v, --verbose print number of discarded bytes

-h, --help display this help and exit
-V, --version output version information and exit

For more details see fstrim(8).
The man fstrim references nothing about --no-model-check option.

Has trim support for Transcend ssd changed with version 16.04LTS?

[ubuntu] Signing dkms drivers with Machine Owner Key (MOK)

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Since kernel version 4.4.0-20, EFI_SECURE_BOOT_SIG_ENFORCE has been enabled--meaning that all kernel modules must be signed by a trusted key. Most modules are shipped already signed by a trusted key, however any modules that need to be build by the user themselves (ie. using dkms) are unsigned and will fail to load with a message similar to the one below.

Code:

modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vboxdrv': Required key not available
This is a problem for me because both virtualbox, and the proprietary NVIDIA drivers fall into the category of modules that need to be built by the user.

There are two possible solutions for this problem.

  • Disable secure boot
Either in the bios or using

    Code:

    sudo mokutil --disable-validation

  • Sign the modules yourself (originally suggested for ubuntu here

    1. Create signing keys

      Code:

openssl req -new -x509 -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout MOK.priv -outform DER -out MOK.der -nodes -days 36500 -subj "/CN=Descriptive name/"

    2. Sign the module (vboxdrv for this example)

      Code:

      sudo /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)/scripts/sign-file sha256 ./MOK.priv ./MOK.der $(modinfo -n vboxdrv)

    3. Register the keys to Secure Boot

      Code:

       sudo mokutil --import MOK.der

Supply a password for later use after reboot
Reboot and follow instructions to Enroll MOK (Machine Owner Key). Here's a sample with pictures. The system will reboot one more time. After the reboot, you may also need to sudo modprobe vboxdrv to load the module.

The later option is more appealing because it doesn't require disabling a security feature. Furthermore, I briefly had this option working (for virtualbox modules at least, it was still buggy for the NVIDIA modules). However after reinstalling Ubuntu a couple times to try and fix discrete graphics problems I can't get it working anymore.

It looks like the key was enrolled correctly

And I signed my modules in exactly the same manner that I used before when it worked (with no errors generated).

Code:

sudo /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)/scripts/sign-file sha256 ./MOK.priv ./MOK.der $(modinfo -n vboxdrv)
However, when I try to load a signed module it fails.

Code:

$ sudo modprobe vboxdrv
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vboxdrv': Required key not available
Very frustrating as exactly the same steps worked two days ago.

Any suggestions regarding how to go about debugging this would be highly appreciated. I'm especially interested in suggestions along the following lines:

  • How to check if the modules were signed correctly.
  • How to check if the kernel has access to the enrolled MOK.
Interestingly the following commands don't appear to show the MOK--but I'm unsure if they should or not.

    Code:

    $ sudo cat /proc/keys

  • Other suggestions
  • Any insights on whether or not Canonical is working on a solution for signing dkms built modules. If a solution is around the corner, I can probably afford to just wait it out rather then dealing with trying to sort this out.

Genius needed - please make system restore function

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hi, as the title says, I(and probably many others) would very much like a system restore function that could be added to GRUB menu, so that in case an update or other things went wrong, then the system could be up and running again in no time and ones personal files were safe. All the backup programs that work from inside Ubuntu are no good if you cannot get to the desktop or the prompt.

Personally I'm using Peach OSI which is built upon Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and later will be updated to 16.04 LTS - I took the jump and are only using linux now and no more windows, only a few programs I were using before don't have linux alternatives and I use them on my other laptop.

Hope someone can make this happen

With kind regards

JBJ

[ubuntu] Customise Unity lock screen

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

I'm a big fan of the Unity desktop and it's been a big hit in my work environment. One issue is the lock screen in Unity - it displays the current user name which is a no-no in our company security policy. I also had issues with it displaying faint ghosting of the secondary monitor desktop contents when running multiple monitors. It's getting increasingly hard to avoid these issues and we may have to abandon Unity altogether.

I noticed that the 14.04 beta had the option to fall back on LightDM when the screen was locked which is great as it can be easily customised to fit the company security policy, but this appears to have been removed in the later Unity 7.2 versions. 16.04 now uses Unity 7.4 and so this option is long gone.

Is there any way to either customise the Unity lock screen, or better yet still force Unity not to use its own lock screen and fall back on LightDM instead these days? If not is there somewhere I can properly request that this feature be added back to Unity?

[lubuntu] Installation of Lubuntu on old Laptop - remove hard drive?

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

Hi there,

I'm trying to intall Lubuntu on an old laptop to use as a NAS / web server / for general messing about.... The laptop is ancient, has 128mb ram and a 800mhz processor. It's running Win XP.

I have tried various installation methods without success:

- Unetbootin install to HDD (same partition as Windows - there is no other option in unetbootin) - The installation competes but no grub bootloader appears and the Laptop just boots into Windows.

- USB stick intallation has the following issues:

- The laptop does not seem to boot my Lubuntu usb stick (which boots on all other boxes).
- I think the BIOS settings are correct, but the laptop keyboard doesn't work, so I can't change the BIOS settings anyway.

I know I could probably use the alternative installer burned to a CD, but I have no optical drive or media to hand.

I've decided what I need to do is:

(1) Remove the HDD from the laptop;
(2) Attach it to my Lubuntu box via a usb caddy;
(3) Install Lubuntu on the HDD;
(4) Replace into laptop.

Is there a method for doing this? Or any method for doig the install via Windows (other than unetbootin which installs, butt won't show a grub menu).

Kind regards,

Steve

[ubuntu] Upgrade to Xenial Xerus?

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

When booting my Linux system I got the message to upgrade my OS to 'Xenial Xerus', eg. version 16.04. When installing this system, about half a year ago, I first installed version 15.?. But due to not working as I expected I had to install 14.04. Should I now jump from the current version I work with, and jump to 16.04, or do I wait a bit before I go all the way?

[ubuntu] /home on separate partition

dimanche 31 juillet 2016

It works better than I had expected before I tried, to keep /home when re-installing an Ubuntu flavour (I usually run Lubuntu). But I guess there can be conflicts in some cases.

You should notice that there are global settings and tweaks, that are stored elsewhere, for example in /etc, so every tweak and setting may not survive, when you keep /home.

If you store your personal data files in your home directory, those will not be house-cleaned, if you keep /home, and you need to get rid of that kind of junk manually

mdadm errors in syslog

samedi 30 juillet 2016

Hi,

I am receiving the following errors in syslog:

Process '/sbin/mdadm --incremental /dev/sdb1 --offroot' failed with exit code 1.

I get the same error for sdc1 and sdd1.

However, my raid5 array is mounting and working properly.

I was wondering what the problem is?

my /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf contents:

Code:

CREATE owner=root group=disk mode=0660 auto=yes
HOMEHOST <system>
MAILADDR root
ARRAY /dev/md/0 metdata=1.2 UUID=73a3720a:da34a4d1:62649d74:63786e4a name=argon:0
Any help would be much appreciated.

[ubuntu] Installing snaps via GUI?

samedi 30 juillet 2016

Hi friends. For the first time I decided to check out some snaps just to see what all of the development buzz is about. I hit a snag and figured I'd ask after I found limited info about this particular error (found some, but nothing that lead me to a resolution).

The act of installing snaps as of now... is that strictly limited to terminal usage? I only ask because I did successfully install the VLC snap through terminal, where the system remotely retrieved the VLC snap through the command line and installed it. This worked, with exception to the fact I think the VLC snap has some issues (no file/edit/view/etc menus, plus clicking on the VLC icon from the system tray up top was blank).

I stumbled across the web UI for the snap store (uapp explorer, if I recall). I downloaded a few .snap files and figured, well, I would think I could double click them and install them. I hit a road block, though.

no file_to_app results to show

That's the error I get with each snap I double click. Software Center launches, it just yields that error immediately. It looked like the amount of snaps on uApp Explorer was larger than what I saw in the terminal output when running "snap find".

Just curious if anybody else has seen this, or if perhaps I'm jumping the gun a bit with installing the snaps via GUI and it's not yet a completed project.

p.s. 16.04.1, fully updated. Thanks for any insight!
