[ubuntu] I tried to install teamviewer on 14.04 64 bit. But i couldn't install libsm6:i386.

lundi 22 août 2016

Hello,

I have Ubuntu 14.04 64bit. I have been trying to install teamviewer on my machine. But I could not install libsm6:i386 that is one of teamviewer dependencies.

I tried below.

Code:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

sudo apt-get install libsm6:i386

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

So I tried to install libuuid1:i386. It required another dependencies over and over again...

Could you tell me what should I do?

So glad to be Windows free (sortof) again!

lundi 22 août 2016

So I consider myself if not an uber computer geek at least a "power user", and tried to keep my dual boot setup of Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 for as long as I could. I need Windows currently because of some Windows-only software I need for my classes (hopefully won't need these ever again after I graduate). I was really fed up with Windows 10 (don't like all the telemetry crap, don't use the Windows app store, Cortana, forced updates, confusing settings options, interface in general). My last straw was the other night I had some school documents open and unsaved, and Windows decided to just restart on its own to apply some updates.

So I backed everything up, completely wiped Windows 10, did an Ubuntu 16.04 install with the option "erase disk and install Ubuntu", and now I am setting up a Virtualbox Windows 7 VM for those pesky Windows needs. So glad I don't have to deal with Windows 10 anymore, glad that I don't have to dual boot and just have Ubuntu as my main OS, and glad that Virtualbox is so awesome that I can use Windows through it and it's remarkably quick.

Anyway, just feel relieved

hyphen key changes first character in a term from lower case to upper case

lundi 22 août 2016

When typing a password or in libre office a sequence of letter, and include - (hyphen) or "minus" the first character, if in lower case, changes to upper case letter.

Thus I can't login directly. I must write the pw in text, correct, and then copy/past. which is quire annoying.

what is the reasin that the "-" key behaves this way.

Thank you for your support

[ubuntu] Screen doesn't turn off when I close the lid

lundi 22 août 2016

Hi

I just installed Ubuntu 16.04 on my Lenovo Ideapad s510p Touch. I've tried getting the computer to suspend when I close the lid but without success.
I've tried the normal System Settings, no good.
I've tried dconf-editor: org->gnome->settings-daemon->plugins->power: lid-close-ac-action(suspend), lid-close-battery-action(suspend), lid-close-suspend-with-external-monitor(true), no good.
I've tried manually editing /etc/systemd/logind.conf, un-commenting HandleLidSwitch=suspend and HandleLidSwitchDocked=suspend, no good.

Now, I've discovered that when I close down the lid, the screen doesn't even turn off. I can see the light through the crack. I think that's a bit odd. Maybe not?

I would like my laptop to suspend when I close the lid, or at the very least, to turn the monitor off. Anybody know about this or can help me solve it? =)
I'm grateful for whatever help you can give. Thanks!

Simon

[ubuntu_mate] HDMI works with Live Iso but not with installed OS

lundi 22 août 2016

Hi! On a notebook the HDMI secondary display output is not working (no signal) after fresh install of UbuntuMate 16.04. It is working properly with the Live Iso from the very beginning of the boot process. Nouveau driver in use in both cases.

What may trigger this behaviour? What should I investigate or how should I proceed? Any hint will be very appreciated. Thanks.

Additional informations:

  • Notebook: Compaq Presario CQ60-203EL
  • External HDMI TV: Samsung LE32B530P7W
  • Nvidia proprietary driver behaves in the same way not solving the issue under Ubuntu 16.04.
  • Works with the very same hardware, free and proprietary driver (version 304.131) under Ubuntu 12.04.
  • System update ininfluent: OS install performed without internet connection. No change with full update.
  • Xorg.log files show no differences between the two boot modes: everything seems to be properly detected and configured in the same way.
  • Output of "xrandr --verbose" is the very same on Live and installed OS.
  • Notebook uses Fn-f4 as the toggle (switch) display key. I'm unable to confirm Fn-f4 detection: acpi_listen shows no output. However, it is not necessary to use such feature with the Live Iso where mate-display-properties and xrandr properly handle display toggling on the fly.
  • Audio: Ubuntu 12.04 detects one properly functioning HDMI stereo output. Ubuntu 16.04 reports a 7.1 HDMI output in addition. When an HDMI audio device is selected under Ubuntu Live 16.04 audio gets disabled and a dummy output is reported. Therefore audio through HDMI is not working under Ubuntu 16.04 neither with Live.
  • Avoiding the use of the vt.handoff kernel boot parameter or use of nomodeset does not solve the issue.
  • Forcing various manual settings through xorg.conf using "NVIDIA X Server Settings" (while using proprietary driver) is noneffective: from the notebook side everything seems to be already configured and working properly except for the signal not being detected by the secondary display.
  • Kern.log files differentiate between Live Iso and installed OS mainly in a few additional lines about vesafb as follows:

--- /LiveISO_Logfile/kern.log
+++ /InstalledOS_Logfile/kern.log

Mini install auto-login PROBLEM no solution works

lundi 22 août 2016

I have ubuntu 16.04 mini install on my htpc with openbox and I want to autologin, startx and start kodi. I got the startx thing done but cannot figure out autologin. I have tried editing grub and following [url=http://ift.tt/1D68Lc3] these [\url] instructions. I have put 'exec /bin/login -f username' everywhere, in /etc/rc.local added it to a script in /etc/rc3.d I have put it in /etc/tty1.conf, I have tried various attempts using /sbin/getty I even followed the commands here [url=http://ift.tt/2bxPEUz] which requires compiling a little login program, putting it in sbin and adding an init script. Every time I end up at the login prompt. I don't want to use lightdm because I want it to be as lightweight as possible (as well as the fact I shouldn't have to). I tried using /bin/login -f username >> /home/username/login.log and the file is always empty. Nothing in auth.log or boot.log gives useful information. I normally don't post questions because they all have usually already been answered but I have tried every method I can find AND THEY ALL FAIL and I can't figure out why.

Edit: What the hell is up with the BB code here?

Settings GUI Crashes

lundi 22 août 2016

Hello,

My settings GUI Crashes. As you can see in the gif.

I tried old kernels, so the new kernel did not do this.

I recently restored a back up, but this has never happened to me before when restoring a back up.

It was working last month.

Everything else is working fine. None of the settings are broken. I just can not access the settings GUI in any of my desktop environments. Cinnamon. Unity, Gnome, Elementary, etc.

I recently installed a new kernel from the update manager. Well...I will just add a pick of recently updated things. Mono is not the cause. At least I do not think Mono complete kills the settings. I installed Mono complete on July 23rd.

[other] Booting ISO from grub

lundi 22 août 2016

Greetings everyone!

I'm trying to boot ISO from Grub and I've followed instructions from wiki and few tutorials to know what it is

So far, I've done this:
>Made a separate folder called "live" on system partition, which is dev/sda9 partition on my existing dual boot with windows 10. As a root. (My home is not separate partition)
>Copied my ISO file (which is Kali.iso) to this folder as a root.
>Opened 40_custom (in grub.d) folder in gedit as a root

Now, here is what I'm not sure about

#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.

menuentry 'Kali Linux' --class os --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os --group group_main {
set isofile="/live/kali.iso"
insmod ext4
insmod loopback
insmod iso9660
loopback loop (hd0,9)$isofile
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 657f4609-e940-4dd1-a909-30ca312126d7
linux (loop)/live/vmlinuz boot=live fromiso=/dev/sda1/$isofile noconfig=sudo username=root hostname=kali
initrd (loop)/live/initrd.img
}

Is this structure of the file correct?

UUID is copied from sudo bilkd for my /dev/sda9 partition, which is default for my existing Linux operating system in this dual boot

Extremely Unhappy With Ubuntu

lundi 22 août 2016

Hello, I have just installed Ubuntu again to do web development and everything has been working great for some time. The computer froze on the weekend in Chrome and I had to hold down the power button. Upon restarting it wouldn't boot as there were hard disk errors. I managed to get in and run an fdisk to fix the errors. However, when I rebooted the system wouldn't start because systemd had many failures, and the login service failed.

I searched all over the internet and couldn't find any basic help on how to repair broken services on start. I also was unable to find utilities to help the situation. Surprisingly, I even read I should be able to reinstall Ubuntu and maintain all my local files and folders, but the Ubuntu install couldn't even find the existing Ubuntu installation and said "unknown linux distribution."

I even managed to install without reformatting the drive. But then when I started ubuntu the package manager wouldn't work and dpkg kept failing with depcon: error in linux package manager due to dependencies and linux generic or something like that. I tried everything that was supposed to fix it but I couldn't install any packages like vim. It always failed.

This was getting so frustrating I ended up reformatting the entire drive and now everything works fine.

How come a modern operating system like Ubuntu Desktop has so many problems that are unrecoverable and it seems unacceptable that there isn't more support than what is out there. To have Ubuntu become unrecoverable like this seems to be totally unacceptable. Isn't there a utility or repair tool (not for grub), but for other issues. In fact, grub is also a problem, I installed ubuntu on my external drive but now I am unable to boot without my external drive (even though grub is on main windows partition). I have tried grub repair and it doesn't work. Nothing works without plugging in my external hd. I feel like I am back in the 80's.

My machine is a 3 year old Dell Lenovo laptop with 16gigs of ram and a lot of hard drive space. Please let me know what is happening here, thanks!

New username needed please

lundi 22 août 2016

Hi there,

Apparently my username violates forum rules: "Religion: This is a forbidden topic forum wide. Please find another venue to exercise your freedom of speech on this topic." (Since Yahweh is the Hebrew name for God, and Yahwehnissi references a Bible passage).

I would therefore like to please request that my username be changed - to "WrexhamWill." Thank you

I'd just like to be clear that:
1) I didn't go out of my way to make this my username - it's just my email address so it was automatically suggested to me as my username when I signed up and I didn't think to change it.
2) I don't think this clearly violated the rules as currently written - as to me the wording "forbidden topic" suggests; "We do not want religion in any way discussed (or any attempt made to bring it up for discussion / proselytise, etc) - 'cos it's a contentious topic and in no way relevant to this forum, so let's not have it here." It does not suggest to me that "any reference whatsoever to religion, even in your username, is forbidden." I'm perfectly happy to abide by the rule that "any reference to religion is forbidden," but I recommend that the wording of the rules be amended to make clear that this is the case.

Thanks,
Will.

[ubuntu] cannot turn off kodi

lundi 22 août 2016

I find that I cannot turn off kodi. I push all the buttons which may do that to no avail. I have quit it (right click on launcher), ended it by program shutdown and clicking on the 'x' on top bar, nothing will work. It just used to take a long time but, now, with 16.04 it just freezes and will not go away. I have been able, however, to turn on the system monitor and kill it (end or stopping will not do the job).

My kodi.log is at: http://ift.tt/2bc17cG

[lubuntu] Automatic deletion as security measure

lundi 22 août 2016

Hi, it has been some years seen I have started to use Ubuntu. At this moment I am using the last Lubuntu distribution on a Lenovo S10e. I use the Prey software to recover my computer in case of theft, and have my documents folder encrypted by Cryptkeeper.

I do not want to use a BIOS password or encrypt my whole disk because that would render Prey useless. If that poor hypothetic thief cannot use the computer, Prey will not activate. So, that sexy thief photos and location would never arrive to my email.

For that reason, I would like to program some command like "rm -rf /home/documents" to run automatically 15 minutes after boot; unless I type a password or execute another command in the terminal. That way, the thief can access freely my computer (and get caught by Prey); but my documents will be deleted after 15 minutes if a special action is not done.

Does anyone know how to program a command to run 15 minutes after boot, every time?

[xubuntu] Display issue of Xubuntu with ultra wide monitor

lundi 22 août 2016

Hello folks,

I have been using Xubuntu 15.04 with xfce on my machine installed with the Nvidia GeForce 315 card, and the display was all good on my old monitor, connected using the VGA cable. Recently I have replaced the old monitor with the new LG ultra wide 34UC98 monitor. When I connect the monitor using the HDMI cable, the resolution is all fine.

The problem is if I put the mouse cursor in the left edge of the screen or the top left region of the screen, the screen turns blank, and there is no way to get back to the desktop. This happens regardless if I log in (on desktop) or not (on login screen).

Some of the system information is included below. Do you know if there is a way to fix this?

Thanks!

[kubuntu] No wireless connection this morning

lundi 22 août 2016

I woke up this morning to find that the wireless internet connection that was fine as I closed the lid last night will not allow me to connect. I updated to 16.04 about 3 weeks ago, and everything has been fine up until now. I've tried simple remedies, reboot, power down, etc. The router is working everywhere else, the same hardware on this HP Pavilion dv6-3122us is used in my Windows partition with no problem. Windows says my network adapter is a Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n Wifi Adapter.

I can access the internet via ethernet cable, which I read on here has resolved the problem once, but it didn't help me. The Connection Editor has the Connect and Disconnect choices grayed out, so the only things I can do with that are edit and delete connections. In trying to fix it myself I deleted the wireless connection in the hope I could add a replacement connection and it would work, but it did not. In adding the new connection it wouldn't even discover my ssid.

I see I'm not the only one with this problem, or at least a similar one. My ethernet cable is only about 7' long and lands me right beside the kitchen stove, and my wife forbids that except in emergencies. I'll check back for a response by reluctantly using my Windows partition, as I must do now. I really prefer Linux, but it's useless to me if I can't get the internet.

RUN fsck MANUALLY

lundi 22 août 2016

Hi,
I've been running Ubuntu for a few weeks on an old-ish laptop (I've used it before on other computers), and trying to log on just now, it's telling me:

/dev/sda1: UNEXPEXTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
(i.e., without -a or -p options)
fsck exited with status code 4
The root filesystem on /dev/sdal requires a manual fsck

It's then started something called:
BusyBox v1.22.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.22.0-15ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash)

And my command line begins with:
(initramfs)

Any help with what to do from here would be greatly appreciated

p.s.
I've turned on & off again few times, including starting in recovery mode - same result.
I've also already run Ubuntu from disk to get my files copied onto a pen drive.

[ubuntu] TPM passthrough and Windows Bitlocker...no compatible TPM found?

lundi 22 août 2016

Another forum member posted a thread about TPM passthrough and its been something I've been meaning to do for a while. Qemu 2.5 has a bug that prevents a Windows guest from loading the TPM driver, this is patched from qemu 2.6 onwards so I've got qemu 2.6.1 in my build chain and am running the guest on the cmd line. Windows now reports my TPM in Device Manager under Security Devices but the Bitlocker app says no compatible TPM can be found :-/ The TPM is most definitely bitlocker compatible as if I boot Win10 on the same bare metal then everything works so this is a virt issue somewhere, and I'd hazard a guess to say its Windows guest specific as I believe passing the same device through to a linux guest works as I got output from tpm_nvinfo in my test linux guest.

Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have a working TPM passthrough with Windows Bitlocker? I've posted to the qemu mailing list but so far zip.

Issues since upgrading to 15.10

lundi 22 août 2016

I have no idea if these issues are linked

1. If I have updates set to LTS Releases only, I am not offered 16.04.1.
2 I have a red triangle exclamation icon which warns "The update information is out of date. This may be caused by a network problem, or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by selecting "show updates" from the indicator menu, and watching for any failing repositories." Doing so results in "The software on this computer is up to date".
3. Boot issues. Repeated attempts to boot result in "Operating system not found". Eventually it boots. Quick Disk check reveals no errors.

Any ideas?

Grub rescue> question

lundi 22 août 2016

My linux Mint 17 Cinnamon has run into a grub rescue> situation after trying to play a video online.

The ls command produces the following:

(hd0), (hd0,msdos3), (hd0,msdos2), (hd0,msdos1), (hd1), (hd1,msdos2) and (hd1,msdos1)

I tested all 7 possibilities with the commands recommended online
set boot= (hdX,Y)/boot/grub
set prefix= (hdX,Y)/boot/grub
insmod normal
normal

6 of them resulted in "error: unknown filesystem" BUT the (hd0,msdos3) showed "error: file boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod not found".

After booting with the original Linux Mint 17 "Qiana" - Cinnamon (64-bit)
installation CD, Gparted shows this:

/dev/sda1 - unknown - boot (about 28Gb)
/dev/sda2 - linux-swap (about 9.5 Gb)
/dev/sda3 - ext4 (about 112 Gb)
and a message 'unable to detect file system" and listing possible reasons.
Personal data is all there.

Looking at this drive with Gparted on my other Mint 17 system, I get similar result,
only the the partitions are called /dev/sdb1 through 3.

QUESTION:
Which of the drive/partition names do I need to use in the commands
set boot= (hdX,Y)/boot/grub and
set prefix= (hdX,Y)/boot/grub
etc....?

Headphones acting weird: 16.04.1, Dell XPS 9550

lundi 22 août 2016

To start, I'm aware of this thread and may end up adding to that thread if I can't come up with a solution...

It seems lately that I've only been able to get sound through my headphones on my XPS 9550 if I don't plug in my headphones all the way. I can tell pulseaudio is detecting when my headphones are plugged in or not (via pavucontrol) and when the headphones are plugged in, I can't get sound through them and when they aren't, I can. This usually requires some fiddling around in alsamixer to make sure my speakers are muted and my headphones aren't. I've done some digging and have made sure that in /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths, analog-output-headphones.conf has this:

Code:

[Element Speaker]
switch = on
volume = ignore
And the end of my alsa-base.conf in /etc/modprobe.d looks like this:

Code:

options snd-usb-audio index=-2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=0 enable=yes
I'm not sure if that's the correct model, it used to be dell-m6-amid which didn't work and led me to change it, I've also tried position_fix=1 with no dice. I'm on a Dell XPS 9550 with a newly upgraded BIOS, 4.4.0-34-generic kernel, and on Ubuntu Studio 16.04.1. I've also done the ol' compressed air in the headphone jack with no help (pulseaudio is detecting the headphones correctly anyways so it probably wasn't an issue in the first place). Thoughts? Maybe this is a hardware issue?

Thanks!

raid trouble?

lundi 22 août 2016

Just a "quick" couple of questions about a raid1 setup on a clean desktop install of xubuntu 16.04.

A. Background

Disks /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc were part of a RAID + LVM configuration in the immediately previous (12.04) install.

The current raid1 array is being used for data only.

The current system resides on a separate disk /dev/sda and is not part of this raid configuration.

I created the raid array and added the ext4 file system to /dev/md0:

Code:

sudo mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb /dev/sdc
sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/md0
I created a mount point and added an entry to fstab:

Code:

# /dev/md0
UUID=x-x-x-x-x /home/server/shared ext4 defaults 0 0
I scanned array details into the mdadm.conf file:

Code:

sudo mdadm --detail --scan /dev/md0 >> /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
A mdadm --detail /dev/md0 shows:

Code:

/dev/md0:

B. Questions

1. In performing fsck.ext4 on devices /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, I receive the following identical output, for both (sdb is shown). A "bad block" reference appears, again (as it did in --examine). Are these bad signs? Should this be reparable?

Code:

e2fsck 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-block
fsck.ext4: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
fsck.ext4: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
 or
    e2fsck -b 32768 <device>
2. A "mounted" icon representing the raid array (dev/md0) appears on my desktop. The array is also mounted at the fstab-described mount point. When I click on the desktop icon, it seems to open to the raid array. When I umount /dev/md0 - BOTH the desktop icon and fstab-reference to the raid array are unmounted. Can I remove the desktop icon? Does the raid array's presence on the Desktop as well at its fstab mount point represent a problem?

Thanks for any guidance!

[xubuntu] How many home directories for multi boot?

lundi 22 août 2016

I agree with the recommendation to have separate home partitions for each of the installed systems. (You can also have /home as directories inside the root directories.)

If you want to share personal files (documents, music, multimedia files) I suggest that you have a separate data partition. When you have Windows alongside linux, it is a good idea to use the file system NTFS in the data partition to make it available for both linux and Windows. Otherwise you should use a linux file system (for example ext4).

(Linux can also read and write the Windows [system] partition, but it is risky, it is better to have a separate data partition.)

[ubuntu] can't do-release-upgrade from 14.04.5 LTS ot 16.04?

lundi 22 août 2016

Hi,

I'm trying to do-release-upgrade from my 14.04.5 LTS box to 16.04 LTS, but do-release-upgrade tells me that either I have unofficial packages or I'm trying to upgrade from an outdated version, neither of which seems to be true. But other than this message, I can't get out the specifics of why the upgrade is not working.

14.04.5 is listed among the 'current' releases: http://ift.tt/1l89RkN . this is what my system sais:

Code:

# lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS
Release: 14.04
Codename: trusty

I filed a bug on this regard, but no response: http://ift.tt/2baQCbk

What could be wrong?

[ubuntu] Installation of Google Chrome in Ubuntu 10.04 32bit

lundi 22 août 2016

32 bit Chrome is no longer available, also I see you are running a "test" environment but Ubuntu 10.04 is also no longer supported and long since passed end of life.

However given this is a "test" installation if you search for the file name "google-chrome-stable_48.0.2564.116-1_i386.deb" you should find it on mirrors where it is yet to be deleted. Secondly, if you have 32 bit machines with it installed you might still find the deb package in /var/cache/apt/archives and lastly chromium-browser is still available in 32 bit, the software upon which Chrome is built.

Errno 5 Input/output error The Installer encountered an error copying files

lundi 22 août 2016

Ok, so I did some research through Google and found that I had to download unetbootin. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and VMware Workstation Player 12.1.1. I downloaded unetbootin. I have two problems. The first problem started when I used unetbootin to download Ubuntu 16.04 Live (32-bit). I downloaded that and I had Ubuntu installed on my USB flash drive, which is 16 GB. And then I created a VM using the PLOP Manager .iso. I chose 100 GB of hard disk space and 4 GB of RAM. I stored the VM somewhere on my external hard drive, which is 1 TB. So I went to the VMware Player, started up the VM, and then I connected the flash drive to the VMware Player. And then I chose to connect to USB and it brought up unetbootin. I choose "Install". The installation went smoothly. I created a username and password and I had to reboot the computer. Ok, now the problem is, when I started up the VM again, this time it attempted to actually go straight into Linux, but nothing happens. It's just a big black screen. Now, if I were to have chose the Default at the unetbootin, I wouldn't have had this problem. In fact, if I had just chose Default, I'd load directly into Ubuntu without having to install and I just log out and shut down with no problems. When I start up the VM, it'll bring up the unetbootin screen again and it'll give me the options. I choose Default and loads with no problems. The problem occurs when I choose to Install and leads me to the black screen.

That was the first problem. Now the second problem is, I used unetbootin and this time I chose Ubuntu 16.04_Live_x64. So it downloaded the 64-bit .iso and installed it to my flash drive. When I was done with that, I created a new VM using the PLOP Manager .iso file and chose 100 GB of hard disk space and 4 GB of RAM. Then I started it up, connected the USB flash drive, and chose USB, and unetbootin screen came up. Now I chose Install. When I finished answering all the questions like username, computer name, password, where are you, do you want to wipe out the drive, ect. I chose to wipe the hard drive by the way. So once I did that, it started doing the Copying Files. When it reached near to the end, like maybe 70%, it popped up this error. "The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk: [Errno 5] Input/output error This is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.". Ok, but the thing is I'm using the flash drive as the destination to install Ubuntu, just like when I was installing Ubuntu 32-bit. So what bothers me is why does this error come up?

Possible to force OpenLDAP to use 3072 Public Key bits or more for RSA?

lundi 22 août 2016

Dear OpenLDAP fans,

I couldn't find a forum specific for LDAP so I am posting here since I saw a lot of LDAP related posts in these forums.

I am using OpenLDAP (2.3) at work but I recently got this weird security requirement to only allow SSL/TLS key negotiations with a minimum of 3072 bit RSA or DSA key lengths.

I could neither find any possibility to configure something like this for LDAP nor any contributing packages which would help on this.

Does anyone know if it is possible at all and if yes, how?

Thanks a lot in advance!

[ubuntu_studio] Plymouth with nVidia UbuntuStudio 16.10

lundi 22 août 2016

***********Please note that the version is 16.04 and NOT 16.10 as mentioned - Thanks howefield for the correction ****************

Hi, I recently upgraded my US 14.04 to US 16.04 (32 bit) and now I have Plymouth woes once again - Plymouth screen was working fine in 14.04.

Here are some background details;

  • Currently Plymouth screen shows up with rotating Ubuntu Studio icon with the Ubuntu Studio logo text underneath.
  • After a few seconds the screen blacks out
  • Now only the spinning icon is visible and the Ubuntu Studio logo is no longer visible.
  • After a few more seconds system boots normally.

I have /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash file with FRAMEBUFFER set to 'y'. and have the following two included in my /etc/default/grub

GRUB_GFXMODE=1400x1050-16
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

Since it appears that the problem may be caused by incorrect hand off, I booted the system without the $vt_handoff command in grub by editing the grub entry at boot time. This throws up some uvesafb errors which flashes across the screen and difficult to write down.

I am running nVidia 304 driver.

I would appreciate if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this problem.

EDIT: Yes, did try the fixplymouth script without success.

[ubuntu] Gnome with Ubuntu

lundi 22 août 2016

I want to use Gnome with Ubuntu 16.04. I understand that it is based on 3.18, but I can't hide the top and bottom bars. I can hide the Unity sidebar, but I'd really rather just do away with it, but the drop-down menus aren't available. When I updated from 14.04 I was running Metacity (don't know exact version, but was on the Software Center in 14.04) and that seemed to work ok in 16.04, but the Software Center had disappeared. I tried unsuccessfully to fix that, but no luck. I had to revert to my clone backup.

Questions :
1) In Ubuntu 16.04, How can I make the top and bottom bars hide?
2) How to use dropdown menus, and do away with the Unity bar?
3) Is Metacity ok for use with Ubuntu 16.04? If so, what to do about the missing software center? Are there any other reasons not to use Metacity? Other than the Software Center, it seemed ok. Will Metacity not be supported after a time?
4) Is there another Gnome that works better with 16.04, but will still have clear and easy dropdown menus, be able to hide top and bottom bars, solid desktop color and desktop icons, no Unity sidebar, and have all features of Metacity?
5) How do I uninstall any version of Gnome without it in the Software Center?
6) Can I update my current 14.04 to UbuntuGnome directly from my current 14.04, just like I tried 16.04, keeping all my software, etc.?
7) If so, would Ubuntu Gnome satisfy my needs mentioned in 1,2, and 3 above?
8) Where is a comprehensive documentary of Gnome(s)?
9) Is there a forum, like Ubuntu Forum, for Gnome? Or is this the best place?

Thanks!

user permissions not working - must be a config error

dimanche 21 août 2016

Maybe I am making this more complicated than it needs to be - I suppose that can be said often for security.

Anyway - I have a series of directories that I can browse from the command line using Putty but using the same user ids from a Win10 box I can't access the same shares via Samba. What am I doing wrong?

Here is the directory on the Ubuntu Server:

Code:

drwxrwxr-x 201 jenny g-dlna 204 Jul 16 10:14 Music
drwxrwx--- 9 jenny g-adults 34 Jul 19 15:05 OurDocs
drwxrwx--- 2 ken g-adults 3 Aug 21 22:23 Test
When trying to browse the shares from Windows 10 useing either user name jenny or ken I get an error indicating "you don' t have permission to access \\UBUNTUSRV\Test"

If I chmod 777 the directory then the shares work - what the freak??? Is group permissions not working in Samba?

What I am running:
Samba version 4.3.9-Ubuntu for the server

Windows 10 on the client

It's got to be error 12 (12 inches from my screen i.e. user error!!)

New user--lost all my stuff

dimanche 21 août 2016

So I made the leap and pledged to follow through with programming this time. I remember finding codeacademy boring so I grabbed a Ubuntu book at the bookstore today and put in the CD to try it out. Everything was going pretty well and I remember following the steps perfectly. For whatever reason (and I flipped through tons of pages that never explained) the Python packages I downloaded wouldn't do what the book said they would--that is, they wouldn't open up a text editor (or interpreter? bear with me I'm a complete newbie). The Ubuntu OS comes with gedit, but whenever I typed a command in Python it wouldn't execute. Figured it was just cause the Python package downloads weren't opening correctly because I didn't know how to do it.

Anyway I worked on this stuff for hours but to no avail with Python. I wasn't even able to download spotify, adobe flash OR chrome. I popped out the CD and left the bookstore. When I got home I saw that Ubuntu was still running despite not having the CD in. I turned off the computer and changed the BIOS settings and boot order back to where they were initially but it still only boots Ubuntu.

Right now I have come to terms with the fact that I probably lost all of my photos, essays, songs and precious bookmarks I had on Windows 10. My fault for not backing up I guess. Still, naturally, I'd like to know if there is a way to recover it. Even better, recover it and dual-boot (I think that's what it's called) Windows and Ubuntu with Ubuntu working well enough to download chrome, adobe spotify and maybe audible. Even better if it lets me program in Python! Pipe dreams eh..

Anyway at this point I'll take any help I can get. Kinda bummed that I can't do anything I want to on my computer haha.

Thanks in advance~

16.04.1 lts. Updates checked daily. By hand. I dont pay much attention to snapd since I use apt-get from CLI or Synaptic from the GUI.

Earlier this evening I was curious about system free space and opened Gnome disk utility. I found two instances of snapd running and mounted here, one

/var/lib/snapd/snaps/ubuntu-core_122.snap

taking up 68 MB and

/var/lib/snapd/snaps/alsa-utils_1.snap

taking up 4.6 Mb.

What are these loop devices and why are they both switched "on"? Sorry if I am a little behind on the latest on 16LTS but I dont much care to have additional things appear on the system. Granted this is through my ignorance and not paying proper attention-- I also understand the reasons for snapd ostensibly "dependencies" but apt get and Synaptic seem to work pretty good without the necessity of additional devices appearing mysteriously. Since I dont plan to use snapd what, shut them off, uninstall them or......

Any suggestions appreciated.

Regards
